Winter solstice. Winter solstice

Winter solstice. December 22, 2015. 4h.48m. GMT (December 22, 7h 48m Moscow)
Ancient winter holidays: Solstice, Yuletide, Yule, Christmas, New Year

December 20 was the last day of autumn for the ancient Slavs, and on December 21, at the solstice - the day of the winter solstice, Kolyaden began - the first month of winter and the new year. On the same day, in accordance with natural rhythms, the Christmas of Kolyada, the hypostasis of one of the main Slavic gods Dazhdbog (Dazhbog, Dazhbog), who embodied the Sun, was celebrated. The celebration of Svyatki - Christmas and New Year, filled with fun, delicious food and magical rituals, stretched out among the ancient Slavs for 21 days, helping to pass the dark, cold winter. At Svyatki, they prepared kolivo, or sochivo - porridge with honey and raisins, and socheviki - sweet pies with cottage cheese and jam. The huts were decorated with dolls of the god Veles (the Slavic prototype of the modern Father Frost) and the Snow Maiden, and burning wheels were rolled on the streets and bonfires were lit to help the emerging winter sun. Carolers went from house to house - young boys and girls who sang carols (ritual songs with wishes for well-being) and received refreshments as a reward. At the first midnight of Kolyada, the priests sacrificed a duck, a piglet and other animals to Kolyada; all this as a treat is present on the Christmas tables of the ancient (and modern!) Slavs. At Christmas time, they dressed up in new clothes and put the best treats on the tables for the family gathered together. It was believed, "as you meet the New Year, so you will spend it.

Whether we like it or not, everyone participates in all the processes taking place in the Universe. Everything that happens affects everyone. Therefore, it is so important to live in harmony with the rhythm of the Universe. This is one of the most important conditions healthy life, prosperity.
All Vedic holidays are mystical, special days. The Earth, Moon, Sun are at this time in special positions relative to each other, the center of the Galaxy and other celestial objects. The sky opens, the Gates open and a huge flow of energy comes to the Earth.
Holidays, depending on the time when they come, have different meanings, but all these days are mystical, they are intended for spiritual work. This better days for spiritual practices, meditation, prayer. They are not meant for worldly affairs. It is no coincidence that the ancient sages prescribed certain rituals on these days.
The sages divide the year into two halves - the divine day and the divine night. The period from the winter solstice (December 21-22) to the summer solstice (June 21-22) is day, and the period from summer solstice to winter is night. The beginning of each of these periods is marked by a holiday, calendar ritual actions.
The sun is revered, deified by all peoples. The solstices were used to improve the quality of life, it was the starting point of a new life. Equinox days are also important - these are the most important astronomical events, special energy time, these are the central points connecting the earth's seasons.

Winter solstice, solstice.

Winter solstice, solstice, one of the most important, special days of the year. Starting from this day, daylight increases and night decreases. On this day, the height of the sun rises in the sky is the lowest. From that day on, the Sun begins its northern path of growth. At this time, the Earth is at the smallest distance from the Sun. Life on Earth largely depends on the Sun, so the approach of the Earth to the Sun and the distance are the most important astronomical events.
The moment of the solstice is the critical moment of transition. About 3 days before and after the solstice, the Earth receives a huge flow of creative energy, this is a magical, sacred time of transition. Like any transitional time, it is for spiritual practices. It is believed that this time is not for material affairs. It greatly contributes to God-centeredness, and not ego-centeredness. The winter solstice marks the beginning of the astronomical new year. This is a holiday of rebirth, the birth of a new sun.
From this moment a new cycle of time begins. The moment of the solstice, the end of long nights is the mystery of the birth of the new, renewal, rebirth, the transition from old life to the new one. This is the mystery of renewal, the day of laying hopes, a solid foundation for a bright future.
This is both death and resurrection, the mystery of the rebirth of old age into youth.
In this energetically special, charged time, you can burn your sins, change your destiny, be reborn, just like a renewed Sun is born again.
In the coming days before the solstice, it is favorable to get rid of everything obsolete, interfering, superfluous (both in the house and in terms of personality, habits, relationships, etc.). It would be good to let go of grievances, leave quarrels, resolve conflicts, favorably make donations, repay debts. IN new life better to go light. With gratitude to God, with pure thoughts, pure intentions and wishes of happiness.
And in a clean place (you first need to clean the territory, get rid of rubbish, garbage and dust on the physical plane as well). It is very favorable to light lamps, incense.

The night before this day is the longest of the year. This is a dark, feminine, magical time. This night opens the door to a new life. It is good to sum up the results of the past year, to thank God for everything that He gives. It is important to get rid of worries, anxieties and enter a new life in a harmonious state.
At this time, together with the sun, all living things begin their path of growth, ascent. It is very important to be God-centered, to move away from the hustle and bustle, to turn inward.
Prayer, meditation at this time will have great power, as well as your good intentions, goals for the future. The rhythms of the Universe at this time are very conducive to this. The power of the resurgent Sun, the powerful energy of creation will fill them.
It is favorable to meet the sunrise, to express our respect to him, to congratulate him on his birth, to thank him for his gifts. It is important to feel this transitional sacred period, the turn from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from death to immortality. If this is done consciously (to discard the negative, obsolete and create the intention to acquire the bright), then ahead - indeed - the bright path of rebirth, growth.
At this time, the sky opens, strong flows of energy go to the Earth. This is a time of Hope and Opportunity. It is very important to use it for your growth, improvement. This is a time of meditation, prayer, a time of good intentions. Should I miss this chance?
This is a great time to improve, change what needs to be changed; get rid of what gets in the way; lay a solid foundation for growth.
This day is celebrated in the culture of every nation. An indispensable attribute of the holiday - fire - these are candles, lamps, bonfires.

Christmas time was celebrated in the Slavic tradition.
Like the ancient Slavs, the inhabitants of central and northern Europe during the winter solstice performed symbolic actions with fire, celebrating Yule.
In Zoroastrian tradition, these days celebrate the holiday of Mithra. Mitra is the god of justice, the all-seeing eye of Asha (Truth). Mitra is associated with the Sun, monitors the observance of dharma, order. On this day, 21 candles are lit.
Holland celebrates Saint Thomas Day. This is the last day of classes before the Christmas holidays. On this day, it is very important not to be the last to come to school, otherwise they will tease “sleepy Thomas”. On this special day, even children cannot sleep for a long time).

Rituals of the Winter Solstice.

The winter solstice is a good time for those who are engaged in spiritual self-development, it inspires the opening of spiritual spaces and reveals past lives.
During the Night of Svarog - the darkest time of the year - a gap opens between the worlds. This allows beings to move freely, enter and exit our world. Although the most severe cold is yet to come (and they are needed to crystallize the intention laid down these days), but the middle of Winter falls precisely on this period. Three days are especially important during this period.
I will talk about three Nights dedicated to the Goddesses of Fate. So..

Night of December 20th. Night of the Old Woman Goddess. At this time, it is necessary to perform all cleansing rituals. Rites and rituals aimed at cleansing and protecting the Family also work flawlessly. And also a day of thanksgiving to the gods of household spirits for help.
December 21 - Night of the Mother Goddess. This is the Goddess of Becoming.
At this time, you should lay a cycle of harmonious connection of the events of your destiny. For example, the weaving of fate from three threads. This is the time when both guests from the underworld and guests from the world of the Gods descend into the Middle human world. In order not to offend the spirits, these days it is not customary to refuse hospitality to anyone - any traveler will receive a table and an overnight stay.
Dec 22. The night after the birth of the sun. This is the night of the Goddess of the future. Here you lay down what should happen to you. This is the night you make wishes. You can also return good luck and prosperity to your entire Family.
Light a candle in honor of the goddess of the Past on the night of December 20th. And Ask her to cleanse your ancestral roots of negativity like this: "Take off, Mother Goddess, with your own hands, what is tangled on the roots of the ancestral, what is imposed on the roots of the unkind, what is said with unkind lips that in ignorance of the unclean it is broken. Truly so!" After reading the plot, put out the candle with your fingers.
On the Night of December 21, light a second candle. Say: "The world will get along well and the fate of my family will be adjusted! So be it!" Extinguish the candle.
On the Night of December 22-23, light the third candle. Here you need to pronounce the Vow. That is, you promise to do something for the good of the Family. The vow can be anything. Do not drink alcohol in new year's eve, refuse sweets for a period of 10 days, do some business that you put off until later ... You just need to think carefully about what vow you want to make, so as not to break it in any case. Having pronounced a vow, say "For the Good of the Family!"
Before dawn, take three candles and twist them into one in a clockwise direction. As soon as the edge of the solar disk appears in the sky, light a candle and read many times.
Spiridon-Solstice! Turn the sun for the summer, and the roads of my kind for the good, strengthen the tree of the family in a catfish-short day. When the red sun rises into the heavens, when at a small hour it goes across the sky from sunrise to sunset. Strengthen Spiridon on my tree, the roots at dawn, the branches at the zenith, the fruits at sunset. Strengthen, Spiridon-solstice from this prayer, from the word of the conspiracy, high, noble tree of my kind to high thresholds, to wide roads. It is good for the family to prosper, for all relatives to be in height and honor. Walk along wide roads, put profit in your wallet. Luck is laid on my tree, luck with roots and fruits is laid from this hour to the age. True!
The plot should be read repeatedly until the candle in your hands burns out.

In 2015, the astronomical winter solstice will occur on December 22 at 04:48.
How to celebrate

The winter solstice is a holiday scorched by the breath of ancient traditions. This is the turning point of the year, at which you can "twist" your destiny. The birth of a new one requires the cleansing of space from those “old coals” that no longer burn, but only take up space and stain the hearth. In the days before and after the Solstice, it will be useful to keep thoughts and feelings clean, putting things in order and making room for the new.

Repay debts, remembering even the smallest amounts
- Thank those people who have become your support and support this year. If gratitude is also crowned with a gift, it will be especially good.
- Make a general cleaning in the home, in the car, in places where you spend a lot of time. It will be useful to disassemble things and give away those that are no longer useful, clear the storerooms and conduct an audit.
- The same should be done at the informational level - by tidying up the hard drive of the computer, by auditing social ties
- At least a light fast is recommended, and alcohol and other mind-altering substances should be avoided.
- Resentment, anger, uncertainty - these are the points of energy exit. By the new year, try to strike a balance in your energy accounting.
- You can plan what you would like to achieve next year. In connection with the accentuated earth element, it is important that your plans are specific and detailed, include certain steps to achieve the goal, and not just "request Mrzd".)))

The holiday itself is best celebrated in the company of people with whom we are connected by common ideas, interests and undertakings. The presence of live fire is favorable not only at the holiday, but also in the form of candles lit at home, during the week before the holiday - in the dark. The table should be modest, almost ascetic - Venus in Scorpio does not favor excesses.

Astrology

The astrological transition of the Sun into the sign of Capricorn will take place on December 22, 2015 at 4 am. Capricorn is a sign closely associated with career prospects, unapproachable peaks, long-term prospects, ascetics and directors. Capricorn jumps on sheer cliffs, not at all embarrassed by gorges, landslides, or the absence of a direct road to the goal. Capricorn is perhaps the most vigorous hybrid of a materialist and an idealist in the entire Zodiac. All material planes, all jumps from rock to rock necessarily have a specific idea behind them, which warms Capricorn.
So we need to find between the material and the spiritual these days. You should not focus only on the ideal component of your projects, that is, dreams. It is impossible and headlong into monetization and profit, losing sight of the dream.
If you plan projects for next year, then taking into account pragmatic earthly moods - with a financial plan and clear steps to achieve. This is not a reason to deny yourself a dream. It is only important to understand the first step that you will take to achieve it. And do it after the Solstice.)))
This solstice can have a transformative effect on people whose significant chart indicators are in the third decade of mutable signs (Virgo, Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces). Now their fate may change course. It is especially important for them to be conscious and honest with themselves and others so that the turn turns out to be good.
Most of the strength and attention is worth spending on completing and closing the old one. Before the Solstice, it is better not to conceive or discuss new projects. You have to give them time to mature. Assess what occupies your strength and energy - whether actions, relationships, reading feeds on social networks. Assess if it benefits you. Ask yourself the question honestly and answer it honestly.
Bisextile with Jupiter, Mercury and Venus in Scorpio at the top will help bring order to matters of finance and relationships. For example, a good time to close ties with other people, to conduct final negotiations, to repay debts of any kind. So the entrance to the new year will be much easier, and there will be more inspiring events in it.

8 interesting facts about the winter solstice.

1. There are two winter solstices every year.

Each hemisphere has its own winter solstice. Since the planet's orbit is tilted on its axis, the earth's hemispheres receive direct sunlight alternately. In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on December 21, and in the Southern Hemisphere on June 21 (we call it summer).

And here's what it looks like from space:

2. The winter solstice happens in an instant

Although the event is scheduled for a full day on the calendar, the sun actually only hovered over the Tropic of Capricorn for a very short period of time.

3. The winter solstice occurs at different countries on different days

But not always. For example, in 2015, the winter solstice occurred on December 22 at 4:49 UTC (7:49 Moscow time). This means that in any place on the planet that is at least 5 hours behind this standard (or 8 hours behind Moscow), the event occurred on December 21st.

4. It's the first day of winter... or not depends on who you ask

There are two ways to look at this issue meteorological seasons and astronomical seasons. Meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle, and astronomical seasons are based on the position of the Earth relative to the Sun. For the astronomer, winter began today.

5. Winter Solstice time of long shadows

Right now the sun is at its lowest position in the sky and the shadows from its rays are the longest.

6. A full moon on the winter solstice is extremely rare.

Since 1793, the full moon has entered the night sky on the winter solstice only 10 times. The last time such an event occurred in 2010, and also coincided with a lunar eclipse. The next full moon on the winter solstice is not expected until 2094.

7. The winter solstice is associated with Christmas.

The winter solstice has been celebrated throughout history. The Romans walked on the feast of Saturnalia, the Germanic and Scandinavian pagans celebrated Yule, the Slavs Kolyada. Even Stonehenge is associated with the solstice. To attract pagans to their faith, Christians have added religious significance to their traditional holidays. Many Christmas customs, such as the Christmas tree, are directly related to the celebration of the solstice.

8. Winter Solstice - a reminder of how grateful we are to Copernicus

English word " Solstice" (solstice) comes from the Latin Solstitium, which means "the point at which the Sun stands still." Before the Renaissance astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who first announced the heliocentric system of the world, people believed that the Earth was stationary, and the Sun revolved around it. The use of the word "solstice" is a beautiful reminder of how our knowledge of the world advanced thanks to medieval thinkers who encroached on the indisputable status quo.

Time to repay debts and pick up tails, burn the past on a winter fire and no longer need to watch how troubles and misfortunes dissolve in smoke. Time to prepare for the transition to a new round, to turn the wheel. December 22 will happen Holy holiday winter solstice. We will talk about it in our material.

Mythology
The winter solstice is a special time. This day combines and synthesizes the Roman Saturnalia, the Scandinavian Yule, and the Christian Christmas. The Celts called this day Deuoriuos Riuri - "the great section, the festival of frost."
Over the millennia, during which the Winter Solstice was celebrated year after year, this day has acquired such layers of meaning, it has become so deeply embedded in human culture that, whether we like it or not, this holiday will influence us in any case.

In order to understand what the mythological features of this holiday are, we will take into account two points:

In many traditions, the annual metamorphoses of the Sun were considered as a model of the work of the Universe. The holidays of the Wheel of the Year were celebrated, and the Sun acquired anthropomorphic features, became an active subject in the eyes of people. We are just like our gods, and our gods are just like us.

Far from always people were sure that they would be able to live until spring. Lack of supplies and, as a result, hunger, cold and darkness - winter was the most difficult time of the year for our ancestors.

And in the end, out of a premonition of a long winter and darkness, out of a feeling of cold and lack of resources, out of uncertainty about the future, the myth of dying and resurrecting deities was forged. On the longest night of the year, the Sun God descended into the underworld to die there, and then be reborn again. The winter solstice is a celebration of death and resurrection.
This is the point of transition from the old life to the new.
This is the boundary between the dead and the living.
It is the joy of life, scorched by the frosty breath of death.
The most paradoxical moment of the year is darkness, alienation, cold and evil, on the one hand, and a new conception, “good news”, a guarantee of the coming Spring, on the other.
So, for example, on the holiday of the Winter Solstice, cattle were usually slaughtered. First of all, for purely utilitarian reasons - you can’t feed him in winter. But, nevertheless, it was on these days that our ancestors ate most fresh meat. In addition, most of the beer and wine harvested in the summer were suitable in the cellars. It turns out that people, rejoicing in plentiful food and drinks, kept in mind the thought of a couple of hungry months in the future.

In Greek mythology, these days, Hades, the god of the underworld, was allowed to appear on Olympus among other deities, which means that death was revered and welcomed along with life.
In many cultures, sacrifices are made on the winter solstice. To shed blood so that the winter, having had its fill, still subsided. Therefore, we, modern people, need to be ready to sacrifice something: old ideas that have warmed up in our souls, patterns of behavior to which we are accustomed. Recognize the importance of the obsolete, let it go and make room for the new.

Astrology

The astrological transition of the Sun into the sign of Capricorn will occur on December 22 at 4 o'clock in the morning.

If you plan projects for the next year, then taking into account pragmatic earthly moods - with a financial plan and clear steps to achieve. This is not a reason to deny yourself a dream. It is only important to understand the first step that you will take to achieve it. And do it after the Solstice.

So the entrance to the new year will be much easier, and there will be more inspiring events in it.

one of the two days of the year when the height of the sun above the horizon at noon is minimum or maximum. There are two solstices in a year - winter and summer.

On the winter solstice, the sun rises to its lowest point on the horizon.

In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on December 21 or 22, and then there is the shortest day and the most long night. The moment of the solstice shifts every year, since the duration of the solar year does not coincide with calendar time.

In 2015, on December 22 at 8:48 Moscow time, the Sun will descend to the maximum in the southern hemisphere of the sky, that is, moving along the ecliptic, it will reach its lowest declination - 23 degrees 26 minutes (in the constellation Sagittarius) and astronomical winter will come. At the latitude of Moscow, the Sun rises above the horizon to a height of less than 11 degrees.

During the winter solstice, the sun does not rise at all above a latitude of 66.5 degrees - only twilight at these latitudes indicates that it is somewhere below the horizon. At the North Pole of the Earth, not only the Sun is not visible, but also twilight, and the location of the luminary can only be recognized by the constellations. On December 21, the sun crosses the 18 o'clock meridian and begins to rise up the ecliptic, beginning its journey to spring equinox when it crosses the celestial equator.

The winter solstice has been observed since ancient times. So, in Russian folklore, a proverb is dedicated to this day: the sun - for the summer, winter - for the frost. Now the day will gradually increase, and the night will decrease. The winter solstice was used to judge the future harvest. In the old days, on December 21, they noticed: frost on the trees - to a rich harvest of grain.

In the 16th century in Rus', an interesting ritual was associated with the winter solstice. The bell warden of the Moscow cathedral, who was responsible for the chiming of the clock, came to bow to the tsar. He reported that from now on the sun turned to summer, the day is added, and the night is reduced. For this good news, the king rewarded the headman with money.

The ancient Slavs celebrated the pagan New Year on the day of the winter solstice, it was associated with the deity Kolyada. The main attribute of the festival was a bonfire, depicting and invoking the light of the sun, which, after the longest night of the year, had to rise higher and higher. The ritual New Year's cake - a loaf - also resembled the sun in shape.

In Europe, these days began a 12-day cycle of pagan festivities dedicated to the winter solstice, which marked the beginning of a new life and the renewal of nature.

On the day of the winter solstice in Scotland it was a custom to launch the sun wheel - "solstice". The barrel was smeared with burning tar and let down the street. The wheel is a symbol of the sun, the spokes of the wheel resembled rays, the rotation of the spokes during movement made the wheel alive and looked like a luminary.

The winter solstice was determined before all other seasons in China (there are 24 seasons in the Chinese calendar). In ancient China, it was believed that from this time on, the male force of nature rises and a new cycle begins. The winter solstice was considered a happy day worthy of celebration. On this day, everyone - from the emperor to the commoner - went on vacation. The army was brought into a state of waiting for orders, border fortresses and trading shops were closed, people went to visit each other, gave gifts. The Chinese made sacrifices to the god of Heaven and ancestors, and also ate porridge made from beans and sticky rice to protect themselves from evil spirits and diseases. Until now, the winter solstice is considered one of the traditional Chinese holidays.
