Decoupage glass jar

In the kitchen, the hostess uses jars and jars to store bulk products, spices. Simple glass containers are boring to store food, so try creating a decoupage glass jar that will maintain the style of the entire room and become a functional and attractive piece of decor.

For work you will need:

  • any banks you want to transform;
  • acrylic primer;
  • patterned napkins;
  • PVA glue or special decoupage;

Step by step instructions for beginners

First of all, clean and dry jars will need to be degreased with any alcohol-containing product. Then cover the outer surface of the jar with primer with a sponge. To make the picture brighter, you need to apply a primer in a few words.

The second step - using fine sandpaper, level the surface of the container.

From a napkin or decoupage card, cut out the fragments you like, make an approximate composition. Apply PVA glue to the primed surface, then apply a napkin.

Place a piece of polyethylene or a stationery file on top of the napkin, gently press and smooth the picture, starting from the middle and moving towards the edges.

After drying, you can add new fragments or finish the background with acrylic paints. If the jar has a lid, coat it with primer, then acrylic paint or use the above method to decoupage the lid.

The last step is varnishing. It must be done in several layers. This will keep the craft for a long time and allow you to wash the jar.

In the same style, you can decoupage coffee cans for storing tea, bulk products or spices: they will give a special flavor to your kitchen.

Original ideas for decoupage

By decoupage of a glass jar of small volume, you can get an original candlestick. The jar can be covered with a primer in whole or in part, only in places where decor fragments are glued. Through the glass, the candle will shine even more effectively.

Using the above master class for decoupage cans, you can make an original vase, flower pots from a tin can. Relief patterns created using a stencil and texture paste will be a spectacular addition.

Decoupage jars with napkins for the kitchen in eco-style can be supplemented with decor from natural materials. Twine, cones, artificial berries will help create original New Year's compositions.

An original way to decorate a jar is decoupage on eggshells. To do this, small pieces of eggshell, previously thoroughly washed and cleaned of the inner film, are carefully glued onto the primed surface.

Then the relief surface is once again covered with glue and decoupage is performed using a napkin or fragments of a decoupage card, rice paper. The result is a spectacular piece of furniture.

Banks do not always have a smooth surface. You can perform decoupage of a tin can with a relief surface in the same way, only you need to be very careful when gluing motifs.

Items made using the craquelure technique have an unusual look. This will require a special varnish. The base is covered with paint, which will then be visible through the cracks, then a layer of varnish is applied, and after drying, it is painted on top with acrylic paint.

The last step is to glue the napkin. The top layer cracks when dried, and the jar takes on an original look. With reverse decoupage and two-component craquelure, the technology changes slightly.

This technique is suitable for jars unusual shape, clay vases and jugs. They will be appropriate in eco-styles, vintage and retro.

A simple decoupage technique will allow you to turn common items into original ones that will complement the style of your home, give it charm and comfort.

You can make cute jars for spices, coffee, bulk products, etc. from old tin cans with your own hands. Such jars will be an excellent gift for housewives for the kitchen interior.

What materials will be needed:
  • an empty iron can from coffee, tea, spices or baby food;
  • universal soil;

  • three-layer napkins or thin paper with a pattern;
  • fixative varnish;
  • for decoration, you can use ribbons, rhinestones, etc.

Step-by-step instructions with photos for beginners

Work begins with degreasing the surface of the can with detergent or alcohol, then applying primer or paint under the base. When dry, apply paint (which paint to use depends on which pattern will be pasted). To give the surface a smooth and matte appearance after painting, sandpaper should be used. To give the surface a cracked look - you can use craquelure varnish, as shown in the photo.

It is worth noting that the thicker the layer of varnish, the deeper the cracks. Glue the pattern only when the surface is completely dry. After gluing the pattern, remove excess glue with a soft sponge. Next, apply a fixing varnish. After applying the first layer on a surface that is not completely dry, you can sprinkle sequins, use rhinestones, it all depends on what design you used. After complete drying of the first layer, apply the second and third layers.

Decoupage tin can

Materials and tools:

  • metal jar,
  • window cleaner,
  • sandpaper No. 100, No. 400,
  • latex putty,
  • putty knife,
  • napkin,
  • primer - white rust enamel,
  • brushes and foam sponges,
  • office file,
  • decoupage glue,
  • glossy acrylic lacquer
  • titanium white,
  • red acrylic paint,
  • cosmetic sponges (triangular shape),
  • gold acrylic paint,
  • yellow acrylic paint.

Operating procedure:
I found a very old metal jar, worn in places, bent in places and quite shabby. I'll try to make something decent out of it.
First, the jar needs to be rinsed and dried well, then degreased by wiping with an alcohol-containing agent (I used a window cleaner).

Now you need to remove all the old paint with coarse sandpaper (No. 100). The lower part of the jar, on which there was no paint, also needs to be sanded.

All dents must be repaired with putty, level the surface with a spatula and dry.

When the putty is completely dry, cover the jar with primer - rust enamel. I applied the first coat of enamel with a brush. Dry the first layer. Enamel primer dries much longer than water-based acrylic primer, it will take 6-7 hours for the jar to dry completely.

After that, sand the surface with finer sandpaper (#400) to even out small bumps.

The second layer of primer - apply enamel no longer with a brush, but with a piece of foam rubber sponge. In order not to get your hands dirty, hold the sponge not with your hands, but with a clothespin or a clerical clip.

Let the jar dry again for 7-8 hours. Then again treat the surface with polishing sandpaper. Don't forget to color and inner surface jars.

The next step in our work will be gluing the napkin. I chose a motif with the image of a cupcake on a delicate creamy, slightly pinkish background.

Cut out the napkin according to the shape of the lid. Peel off the top ink layer of the paper towel. Do not throw away the bottom two layers, they will still come in handy.

Place the napkin face down on the file and pour water over it. In water, the napkin will wrinkle and begin to bubble, gently touching the edges of the napkin, stretch it, trying to smooth out the wrinkles.

With a bevelled brush, smooth the napkin from the center to the edges, expelling air bubbles from under the napkin. When the napkin settles well and evenly, bend the napkin and drain the excess water from the file.

Walk with a dry cloth (the two layers that you separated) on a damp cloth with blotting movements, while all remaining small bubbles air will be lost.

Turn the file over and place the tissue paper on the lid of the jar. Without removing the file, go with a spatula from the center to the edges, expelling the remaining bubbles, smoothing out the remaining wrinkles and achieving a good fit of the napkin to the jar.

Cover the napkin with glue for and dry.

When the glue dries, polish the surface with a thin sandpaper and cover with a glossy acrylic varnish.

When the varnish dries well, polish the surface again with a thin “sandpaper”, and walk along the edge with a harder sandpaper, breaking off the protruding edges of the napkin.

Since the background of the napkin is not white, but cream, the entire jar will have to be painted in the same color. To get the right shade, I mixed titanium white with a dab of red acrylic paint.

Apply the paint with a soft cosmetic sponge, gently working around the picture. Paint the jar as many coats as you need so that the background of the jar blends completely with the background of the pattern on the napkin. After each staining (I had three layers), be sure to polish the surface with fine sandpaper.

To paint the peas, mix gold paint with yellow, achieving a complete match with the paint that painted the peas on a napkin.

Draw peas with any tool at hand. I used a manicure tool that makes dots on the nails.

Dry the paint and coat the jar on all sides with several layers of glossy acrylic varnish, drying it and polishing the surface each time. I got at least five coats of varnish. Here you go, jar updated with decoupage ready. She is unrecognizable!

Such a jar is not ashamed even to give!
