Sometimes it is not always possible to depict a detail on a drawing document in full size. How is that? Everything is very simple - you need to proportionally increase all the dimensions of a part or any mechanism by 2 times in order to better see them on the sheet.
What is scaling?
To build any drawings, the Unified Design Documentation System is used as the basis, which describes not only the principles of scaling, but also the rules for arranging parts on the drawing, applying dimensions, shading, filling in the main inscription.
The word "scaling" itself is taken from German language and means in the original translation "size, measurement". Scales are used to depict large-sized products - aircraft parts, structural elements of residential and public buildings, etc., as well as to increase small-sized parts - a wrist watch mechanism.
M 1:1 is the real size of the drawn part, and 1:2 is a reduction in the size of the part by 2 times so that it fits on a sheet of a certain format.
The 2 to 1 scale is like a visual increase in the natural dimensions of the product by 2 times, so that the designer at the factory can understand how the finished part should look like.
The drawing standard from 1968 gives an idea of the existing scales and methods for their construction: 1:1; 1:75; 1:500; 1:1000; 100:1; 4:1; 2:1.
Scale 2 to 1 is, as it were, the smallest of all magnification scales.
How to build a part?
To depict elements in a drawing, you need to know or measure their linear dimensions, then multiply them all by two and make a drawing by double the dimensions. It is important to remember that the dimensions of the corners and the radii of rounding do not need to be increased or decreased!
When applying dimensions after constructing the drawing, the natural linear dimensions of the parts are indicated. In order for the designer to understand that the part is intentionally enlarged by 2 times, it is necessary to indicate "scale 2 to 1" on the drawing. This is written in the "Main inscription" table in the "Scale" section.
If only individual elements were enlarged in the drawing by 2 times, then a “2 to 1 scale” is written above the image of these elements - this is, as it were, an increase in the selected object (see the figure above).
