Wool picture “Snowman”. Master class with step-by-step photos

Needlewomen never sit idle. In their skillful and sensitive hands, any material is ready to turn into a masterpiece of art or a good fashionable item. Craftswomen even figured out how to use ordinary wool. Felt products can be an excellent gift for relatives and friends.

The felting technique itself was invented a long time ago. However, over time it was forgotten. Now felting is gaining popularity again, and in stores you can find entire kits for felting wool products. There are two types of techniques - wet felting and dry felting. The first process uses a hot soapy solution. The woolen layout is impregnated with it, and then the wool is ironed and rubbed in different directions, gradually increasing the pressure. The result is a dense fabric - felt. This method is good for creating flat products.

In dry felting, a special needle is used. The hairball is repeatedly pierced with it, and the shape of the needle promotes tangling of the fibers.

Please note that with the wet felting technique, 30-40% of the wool from the pattern will shrink.

Wet felting, in turn, is divided into two methods: felting pre-knitted products and nunofelting - felting wool onto silk fabric. The first method involves washing pre-knitted merino wool items in the washing machine. Using the latter method, you can create fashionable and interesting products. The idea belongs to Japanese designer Sachiko Kotako and Australian Polly Stirling. They presented products made from nunofelting in 1994, which immediately gained popularity.

Interesting crafts made from wool for felting: nuances of creating products

Handmade crafts are a great gift. In addition, they can become interior decoration.

The laziest can use a simple method - knit the product and wash it several times in the washing machine. For example, you can create a wool Easter egg. To do this, take a three-dimensional mold, cover it with wool and fix everything with nylon. And then they wash it. The original egg is ready for Easter!

A master class will help you understand the basics of wool felting. You can find video tutorials on the Internet. In addition, numerous websites describe in detail the processes of making original products, including New Year crafts.

Everything is limited only by the imagination of the needlewoman. Animal figurines, a New Year tree (Christmas wreaths, balls), bracelets, shoes, carpets, decorative fruits and vegetables, magnets - all this and more can be easily created using the felting technique. Depending on the felting method, various devices will be needed.

Types of needles for felting wool at home

There are many types of needles for dry felting wool.

According to the type of section they are:

  • Triangular;
  • Conical;
  • Diamond;
  • Cylindrical;
  • Star-shaped;
  • Three-star.

There are also crown needles (used to attach decorative elements to a product) and reverse needles (to add fluffiness to the item).

Initially, needles were used not as a handicraft tool, but for making felt in the industrial sector.

The main material for felting is merino wool. However, other types can be used.

Suitable wool:

  • Rough sheep. It is good for making toys and ethnic clothing.
  • Camel combed. It is used as a material for toys created without a base.
  • Semi-fine sheep and Angora goat - these are used to decorate products.

As additional materials, for example, for stuffing, cotton wool or synthetic padding is suitable. Ready-made crafts are decorated with silk fabrics or organza.

Beautiful New Year's craft Snowman: felting for beginners

With the help of felting you can create not only felt boots and slippers, but also various crafts. For example, felt will make an excellent snowman. Even beginners can cope with this task.

To create a snowman using wet felting you will need:

  • Wool. White and colored.
  • Soap;
  • Warm water;
  • Bamboo napkin;
  • Needle, sponge;
  • Beads or seed beads.

Take a small strip of wool (any color) for the base and make a ball out of it. Next, the ball is carefully moistened with water so that it does not change shape. Hands must be thoroughly soaped. We take the ball in our palms and roll it, giving it the desired shape. In this case, you will need a ball.

The resulting ball is placed on a bamboo napkin and rolled. The ball is then washed under warm water and left to dry. Three more such balls are prepared for the snowman in a similar way.

Now you need white wool. It is wound around a ball and pressed to the base using a needle and sponge. The first part of the work is completed.

Next comes decorating the snowman. Choose beads or beads - they will be the eyes and mouth. A small piece of orange wool is shaped like a carrot - the nose of a snowman. Hands can be made from wire, or also felted from wool.

How to do felting of wool products with your own hands (video)

Felting is a great way to spend time. For those who are fond of handicrafts, this is another opportunity to show off their talents. Wool felting does not require much investment; it can become a real family hobby. All you have to do is give free rein to your muse and get to work!

I suggest you make a funny snowman from felted wool. This toy will be an original New Year's gift for family, friends or acquaintances. Any felter who has even a little experience and understands felting needles can handle this work.
Required materials and tools:

  • wool for felting (white, black, brown, red);
  • padding polyester;
  • felting needles No. 36, No. 38, No. 40 (if you don’t have these needles, you can use needle No. 38).

Let's get to work. We form two balls from centipon, different in size: one large, it will be the bottom, the other smaller for the head. You will also need a semicircle to connect these balls. We felt them with a needle No. 36 then No. 38, until medium density.

Then we wrap all the formed parts with white wool and begin felting, starting the work with a 36 needle. Then we change the needle to 38 as it falls, and finish with a 40 needle.

After we have felted these elements, we connect them together. A large ball with a semicircle and a small ball. We weld them to each other with a needle No. 38 diagonally and vertically. In order for these parts to hold together more tightly and have a more beautiful appearance, we connect them together with a separate piece of wool, as in the photo.

It turns out this white figure.

To continue the handles, we make mittens from red wool. First we felt the palms, then the fingers, again we made all the paired parts at the same time.

We connect our fingers with our palms, pressing them down. You get these red mittens.

We roll the mittens onto our blanks and the handles for the snowman are ready.

Now we make the legs from a small piece of black or gray wool.

Next we make the hat. To do this, you can take a mold that looks like a bucket and wrap it with brown wool, and roll it a little diagonally with a needle. Then remove the mold, fill the empty space with padding polyester and roll it to the desired size and density.

Now let's felt the scarf. First we make it from a long strip of red wool, and at the end we add white wool.

Let's bring our snowman to life. Using a needle, we knock out the places on the face where the eyes and mouth will be. Then we roll black wool of the desired shape onto these places, as in the photo. Attach the nose just below the eyes.

We offer a master class for those who want to learn how to felt toys and have virtually no experience. Making such a toy (in this case, his height is 14 cm) usually takes about 15-18 hours. Watch the tutorial on how to make a carded wool snowman.

To make a snowman you will need:

White carded wool (about 50 g);

Some orange and red wool;

Sintepon for the base;

Two beads for eyes;

A large needle and a harsh thread;

Sponge, glue, nail file;

4 fine needles and 1 coarse;

Dry pastel + brush.

Snowman using dry felting technique step by step:

Choose a picture of a snowman. You don't have to make an exact copy, but the ratio of the snowman's body parts is important.

Making the body:

The snowman's body will consist of three balls of different sizes and handles. Take the padding polyester, roll it tightly and sew it with thick thread. This will be the base for the largest ball. Fluff a small piece of wool and apply it to a ball of padding polyester, and press it with a thin needle (photo 2). Cover the surface of the entire ball with a layer of wool. Try to avoid any bald spots and ensure that the fur lies flat. Next, work with a coarse needle (photo 3-4).

Start making the next ball. For this you will need a small piece of wool, which must first be fluffed so that “creases” do not occur. Form into a ball, working carefully with a coarse needle. Start small and then add pieces of wool, while constantly turning the ball in your hands. Make it the size and density you need. It is important not to overload the workpiece (photo 5-6).

When starting to work, try to get the needle between your fingers. Make two balls of different sizes and try them on. Attach the center ball to the bottom ball. Cover the joint with a small piece of wool (Pic 7-10).

Start making arms for the snowman. Take two identical pieces and fluff them. Felt the wool, turning it in your hands, giving it the desired shape. You need to make two identical elements. You need to alternately form one hand and then the other. Add wool to achieve uniform size and density (photo 11-12).

Then fluff out the upper arm and secure it to the body (photo 13-15). “Attach” the arms to the body using wool. Compare the sizes of the handles (photos 16-18).

If the snowman turns out to be thin, add fur to the sides and belly (photo 19-20).

Making the head:

Move on to the next part - make a ball for the head. Seal it and measure it. Attach the head to the body, lining the joint with wool (photo 21-22). Deepen the eye sockets and glue/sew beads into them (photo 23).

Work on his facial expressions - make his cheeks and chin. Make an oval-shaped blank from a small piece of wool. We attach it to the head. Next, make two identical balls for the cheeks. Felt them, not forgetting about symmetry. Draw the mouth (photo 24-26).

To create eyelids, use a sponge. And to speed up the process, you can tie three thin needles using a money elastic band. Start by taking two pieces of wool of the same size. Fluff them and place one of them on the sponge (photo 27).

Gently seal the top first on one side and then on the other. Form a smooth edge. Press the wool again on both sides. Make two identical elements (photo 28-30). Do the same for the upper eyelids. Start attaching from the lower eyelid (photo 31-32).

The snowman's facial expression will depend on the shape of the eye shape (photo 33-34). The eyes are ready - make a mouth. Deepen the mouth line using a coarse needle. And mark a place for the spout (photo 35-37).

To make mittens, use red wool. Begin to carefully create the desired shape by turning the wool in your hands. Make a couple of mittens at once and compare their sizes periodically. Make a finger from a small piece and attach it to the main part. Add wool if necessary. Leave the area where the mitten is attached to your hand fluffy (photo 39-44).

Make a nose for the snowman - form a cone from a small piece of orange wool and secure it in the intended place (photo 45-47).

Sanding the snowman:

After forming a dense body, proceed to grinding. Take a piece of wool the size of a penny. Fluff it well and gently roll it to the body using a thin needle. Lay the fur like fish scales, covering the entire surface of the toy (photo 48-50).

One handle can be lowered to make the snowman look natural. To do this, press on top of your hand and work well on the line connecting the arm and torso (photo 51-52). Don't forget to sand the mittens (photo 53). Attach the “buttons” by first felting three small balls (photo 54).

Snowman tinting:

For tinting, you can use dry pastel in earth tones. Grind the pastel on a file, and then tint the surface with a brush. Then dress the finished snowman in a scarf and hat.

With coming!

We are starting to prepare for the New Year. I'll tell you how to crochet a snowman.

We will need:

  • white yarn,
  • remnants of red or orange yarn,
  • any other colored yarn for accessories,
  • eyes (ready-made or beads, buttons, etc.),
  • hook,
  • scissors,
  • needle, white thread,
  • any filler (synthetic fluff, cotton wool, etc.).

We knit the body from bottom to top.

To crochet a ball, in each row the number of intermediate loops between the additions of columns will increase.

3rd row: 1 sbn in one column of the previous row, 2 sbn. in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 18

8 row: 1 sc in each of the six loops of the previous row, 2 sc in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 48

Row 9: 1 sc in each of the seven loops of the previous row, 2 sc in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 54

Rows 10-14: 1 sc in each stitch of the previous row. = 54

15th row: 1 sc in each of the seven loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 48

16th row: 1 sc in each of the six loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 42

17th row: 1 sc in each of the five loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 36

18th row: 1 sc in each of the four loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 30

Row 19: 1 sc in each of the three loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 24

Row 20: 1 sc in each of the two loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 18

21st row: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 12

22nd row: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 6

Description of how to knit a snowman's body:

When knitting in the round, it is very important to evenly distribute the number of knitted stitches, so first I will present you with a diagram.

We start by closing two air loops into a circle.

To knit in the round, the initial circle should consist of 6 loops or single crochets.

Threading the hook into the second loop from the hook (Fig. 5), we knit 6 single crochets (Fig. 6).

We close with a connecting stitch, which we knit into the first loop of the row.

If you count, now you can see 6 loops formed by single crochets of the first row. We do not take the connecting loop into account.

Any knitting rows in the round begins and ends exactly the same. First, lifting loops must be made, and at the end a half-column is knitted from the last column of the row to the first column of the same row, thereby connecting the end and the beginning of the row. This will also help you avoid getting tangled in knitting and add stitches evenly.

We knit two single crochets into the first loop of the previous row (! Not into the chain lifting loop). So we knit two single crochets in each loop to the end of the row. Total 12 columns (lifting does not count)

We close the connecting column into the loop of the first column of the second row and make an air lifting loop.

Single crochet in the first stitch of the row, then two single crochets in the next stitch. We knit alternating until the end of the row - single crochet in a loop, two single crochets in one loop. Total 18 columns.

We close the circle with a connecting post and a lifting air loop.

A single crochet in each of the next two stitches and two single crochets in the next stitch. So alternately we knit until the end of the row. In total you will get 24 columns.

The number of intermediate rows depends on your desire; for a ball, 5 rows are enough; the greater the number of intermediate rows, the more elongated the body will be.

You can also reduce the initial number of rows, then your snowman will be smaller.

We reduce it as evenly as we added it.

Fill with any filler...

We finish knitting according to the pattern described above.

At the end of the loop we tighten and secure the thread.

The head is knitted similarly:

1st row: in the second loop from the hook, knit 6 single crochets (sc) = 6

2nd row: 2 sc. in each column of the previous row = 12

4th row: 1 sc in each of the two loops of the previous row, 2 sc. in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 24

5th row: 1 sc in each of the three loops of the previous row, 2 sc in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 30

Row 6: 1 sc in each of the four loops of the previous row, 2 sc in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 36

7th row: 1 sc in each of the five loops of the previous row, 2 sc in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 42

Rows 8-10: 1 sc in each stitch of the previous row. =42

11th row: 1 sc in each of the five loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 36

12th row: 1 sc in each of the four loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 30

13th row: 1 sc in each of the three loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 24

Row 14: 1 sc in each of the two loops of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 18

We fill our ball with synthetic fluff and finish knitting.

Row 15: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 12

16th row: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 6

We tighten the loops and fasten the thread.

If you reduce or increase the number of rows when knitting the body of a snowman, in the same way reduce or increase the number of rows of the head.

Sew the head to the body...

Handles 2 pieces...

I didn’t try to be too clever. We select the length you need from air loops, and then knit 5-7 rows with single crochets into each loop of the previous row.

To to tie snowman mittens you can do this...

We tie it to the handle: (I didn’t count the loops, their number will depend on the number of rows of the handle).

1st row: 2 sc. in each column of the previous row,

Row 2: 1 sc in each stitch of the previous row.

Let's get a cuff...

3rd row: 2 sc. in each column of the previous row,

4th row: 1 sc in each loop of the previous row.

5-6 row: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Let's alternate.

We tighten the loops and use the same thread to sew the mitten to the place where the finger will be.

We knit 2-3 lifting chain stitches and go down using single crochets. We tighten the loops and fasten the thread.

1st row: in the second loop from the hook, knit 6 single crochets (sc) = 6

2nd row: 2 sc. in each column of the previous row = 12

3rd row: 1 sbn, 2 sbn. in the column of the previous row. Alternate = 18

Rows 4-13: 1 sc in each stitch of the previous row. = 18

We fill the nose a little with synthetic fluff.

Row 14: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 12

Row 15: 1 sc in the loop of the previous row, 1 sc in two adjacent columns of the previous row. Alternate = 6

We tighten the loops and fasten the thread.

To knit a carrot, we close three air loops into a ring and knit with single crochets in a circle to the required length. We tighten the loops and pull the thread in the opposite direction.

All that remains is to knit the scarf and hat, sew on the eyes and nose.

Our snowman is ready.

The description turned out to be quite grammatical, but you can knit such a snowman in a few hours, if only you wanted!

Another gentleman. 🙂

And a smaller snowman...

Have fun creating!

I was glad to help!
