Near Matryona Timofeevna even the "hero of the Holy Russian" grandfather Savely seems weak. The author's attitude to this hero is ambivalent, it combines admiration and a sad smile. Savely's heroism is not that useless, but unpromising. It is not given to him to influence the future, just as it is not given to save Dyomushka.
