How to sew a satin ribbon to a dress. How to sew on edging tapes

You will need

  • - an old blanket or bedspread;
  • - pins;
  • - gelatin;
  • - candle or lighter;
  • - non-woven tape (cobweb);
  • - oblique inlay, satin ribbon.

Instruction

Before you start cutting the satin fabric, lay out an old blanket or bedspread on the table. Then spread the satin fabric on top, making sure that the edge is even and coincides with the edge of the table or blanket. Pin the cut with pins in several places, then pin the pattern on top. With soap or chalk, draw the outlines of the part (you can also use a pencil, but keep in mind that it will be very difficult to remove it from some types of satin). Cut very carefully, it is advisable not to break off the pins.

To prevent the fabric from crumbling when sewing, treat the edges with a gelatin solution (except for white satin) or burn it with fire (using a lighter or candle). Please note that these measures cannot be permanent, they will only help for the duration of sewing.

To keep the edge strong for a long time, glue a non-woven tape along the edge, while using a fabric or knitted web. Such a measure is especially necessary if the atlas is not of very good quality, and when you try to push the equity threads apart, a gap is visible. In this case, glue the tape so that it overlaps the seam by 1-2 mm.

You can sew parts with a double “French seam”: first sew along the front side, carefully trim the edge (usually no more than 5 mm), then turn it inside out and sew again as it should be - on the wrong side, so that the raw edge is inside.

It is necessary to sew two parts from the satin so that they do not stretch, but at the same time do not overtighten, for this, before machine stitching, baste them manually, even with an oblique seam (so that the fabric does not have the opportunity to gather on a thread).

Finish the edges of the satin with a satin ribbon, slanting trim or a blind seam over the edge. If you decide to simply fold the hem, be very careful, especially if cut along the bias. First fold the edge in one layer, baste and iron. Only then hide the edge inward and sew (by hand or by machine), while keeping in mind that thin types of satin are very sensitive to ironing, and ironing can bring all the flaws of the seam to the front side.

Helpful advice

Sew from satin fabric should only be very thin and sharp needles, so as not to form puffs.

Depending on which particular finishing method is used, the seams and cuts vary in width and shape. The choice of processing must be approached responsibly.

Instruction

When processing all types of cuts, you should remember the following rule: each cut is swept twice, along the hem line at the edge of the product and after ironing, at the edge of the cut. This makes it easier to sew a blind stitch. They notice each time, freely positioning the thread, without pulling the material. In children's and women's clothing made of thin fabrics, a cut is often used, hemmed with hidden stitches. The processing is as follows: first, the fabric is tucked in by about 5 mm and stitched in this way at the very edge. The hemmed edge is tucked inward again, now to a standard width of 2-5 cm, swept up or stabbed and ironed. After that, they are hemmed with hidden stitches by hand, the basting is removed and ironed again.

In the manufacture of everyday clothes from thin cotton and linen fabrics that require frequent washing, as well as in table, bed and underwear, a hemming method is used in the form of a stitched edge. When performing it, the open section of the fabric is folded to the inside, making a hem 3-5 cm wide. If the fabric is easily wrinkled, you can not iron the hem, but iron it with your hand along the entire length. Using a ruler, you should check the uniformity of the hem along the entire length of the fabric in order to eliminate strong drops. After checking and correcting, the fabric is folded again to the same width, securing the hem with pins or sweeping for reliability. After that, they are hemmed on a typewriter with an ordinary line or with a zigzag, if the machine has it. For more decorative effect, you can use any of the finishing embroidery stitches. The zigzag is a must with this method of finishing cuts on knitwear, as it will allow the fabric to stretch without tearing the stitching. After the seam is completed, the needles with which the seam is stabbed or the basting stitches are carefully removed.

Making roses from satin ribbons is not as difficult as it might seem to a beginner. Such beauty can decorate pelmets, curtains, sofa cushions. Yes, anything! Looks very soft and elegant.

Roses can be used as a brooch, show off on a headband, hair band, even beads. In a word, the scope of these satin roses is very wide.

Consider several workshops for making roses from satin ribbons.

Chic rose from a wide ribbon

To work on this little masterpiece, we need:

  • Long pink satin ribbon
  • sharp needle
  • Pink threads
  • Scissors

We take our satin ribbon by the edge. We bend it at an angle of 45 degrees so that a small tail remains. The place of inflection is sheathed over the edge.

We bend the tape again towards ourselves and also sheathe the place of the fold with threads. At this point, we should have a sheathed triangle.

We bend the tape again and the figure begins to resemble a square. We sew this inflection.

Finally, we bend for the last time until we get a square. Most of the tape on top remains free.

Turn the square over so that the free end of the tape is on the bottom. At the right side of the square, you can see the tail, which we made at the beginning of our work.

We turn the square over so that the free tape lies on our fingers.

And again we begin to bend the tape at an angle of 45 degrees, but no longer sheathing the edge, as before, but simply holding it with our fingers.

After 4 turns of the tape over the first base square, we will get another, already three-dimensional square.

We do this path several more times until we get several volumetric squares - future petals.

We add a "stack" of squares until the tape runs out. The remaining small tip is twisted into a flagellum.

We fill the edge of the flagellum into the core of the "stack" of squares.

The flagellum should come out from the back of all the squares.

Now the squares need to be tucked a little so as to simulate the arrangement of the petals in a rose.

We twist, scroll, straighten them with our hands until we achieve the maximum resemblance to a rose.

Flip the rose to the other side. The remaining tail of the tape is sewn more tightly to the flower. You should get such a slightly convex circle. As soon as it arrived, we cut off the rest of the ribbon.

Our beautiful flower is ready!

Yes, it can be a little confusing at first, but after your debut attempt at creating a satin rose, you will make similar flowers very quickly.

Rose on an elastic band

A rosette can also become a hair ornament. A rosette on an elastic band looks especially impressive. Let's try to make a rose from a satin ribbon, and then attach it to an elastic band.

We will also need a medium-width satin ribbon. Color is up to you.

Put the tape on the table. 5-6 centimeters from the left edge we throw inward.

Then we bend the tape towards ourselves at an angle of 45 degrees and fix the place of the inflection with a pin so that the edge of the ribbon looks down.

We bend the tape up and repeat the same steps until a square is formed. We fasten the places of inflections with pins.

If we turn the square over, we get four small squares looking at each other.

We take a needle and stitch all sides of our square. At the same time, we do not take out the pins yet.

Now you need to carefully pull the thread so that the base becomes rounded, that is, the original blank will turn into such a small round bag with a hole at the bottom.

Flip the rose to the other side. We straighten, we got a neat, round bud.

We take the next tape. We put its ends crosswise so that a circle-loop forms at the top. We fix the place of intersection of the ends with a pin.

As a result, we get a figure that looks like a trapezoid. The sides also need to be sheathed.

Again we pull the thread, again we get a voluminous bag. But there is no hole.

So we got two buds: large and small.

We insert a small bud into a large one, closing the hole.

The rosette is almost ready, it remains only to make a leaf. To do this, we take a green satin ribbon. Bend the edge so that a cone is formed.

With a pin we fix the place at the base of the two cones. So we got the leaves for the rose. Sew them to the finished bud.

It remains only to fix the rose on an elastic band. Take a small piece of felt in the same color as the rubber band to cover the place where the rosette is attached to the rubber band.

Braid or play ponytail and secure with your new homemade hair tie. Very gentle, feminine and original. It is unlikely that anyone will guess that such a satin ribbon rose is made by your own hands, and not bought in a store.

Bouquet of roses

And another original way of making roses from satin ribbons. In order to make a dazzling bouquet of such roses, you need to make each flower separately.

To twist one such rose, we need a round base. It can be cut from thick burlap or gauze folded into several layers (to make it denser, starch it), as well as from felt. Here's what we do next:

Cut out a circle with a radius of 3-5 cm (at your discretion).

In the circle we mark a tuck segment, it needs to be cut and sewn, as a result we get a small cone.

If the tuck is made large, the cone will turn out to be high, which is why the flower from the ribbons will be more voluminous

We impose a satin ribbon on the cone so that its edge with a square covers the top of the cone.

Sew the ribbon to the cone.

In a way already familiar to us, we begin to bend the tape in a circle so that the result is a square.

We fix the places of inflections with our fingers.

From these voluminous squares, a flower bud begins to emerge. The more squares, the more voluminous it turns out.

Gently straighten the petals with your hands and then the rose will be incredibly beautiful!

To create a bouquet of such roses, you must first make a basis for it. It is easy to make a handle for a bouquet from old felt-tip pens, folded together, pasted over with tape and rewound with a satin ribbon. We fix the foam ball on the base of the handle with hot glue. If there is none, you can make a ball of papier-mâché or just crumple the paper so that you get a ball and stick it with tape. It remains to stick our beautiful roses on the ball. Such a bouquet can be presented for a birthday, used as a hand-made wedding bouquet, or fixed in a pot - make a topiary - and put on the windowsill.

There are many ways to use these roses. They can be combined into bouquets, or you can make incredibly beautiful head jewelry out of them.

Recently, wreaths made of artificial flowers have gained incredible popularity. Most often they are a satin bandage with an elastic band, the top of which is decorated with a floral volumetric appliqué. It's really very fashionable, stylish, and for long-haired girls it's just a godsend! You will immediately become like a beautiful fairy who, by some miracle, wandered to the ground. Such wreaths are not so cheap, so making them with your own hands is not only pleasant, but also cost-effective.

You will need to sew the bandage itself from satin fabric, matching the color of the flowers that will be on it. And then sew roses to it from satin ribbons, which we have already learned how to make. At the same time, you yourself regulate the size of the rose, the number of them on the bandage and the location. And if you can already make a rose from a satin ribbon, then it will not be difficult for you to design such a delicate wreath.

Surely you have girlfriends who would be happy to see such a decoration on one of their wardrobe items. And you can safely call yourself a designer - after all, you created such beauty with your own hands. Satin ribbons are cheap, beautiful and very affordable material.

Clothing has been around for a long time. And to this day, many scientists, historians, archaeologists have not decided when for the first time people began to put on something. Every year, the requirements for clothing only increased. For a modern person, it is already important not only to cover your body, but also to have quality things.

Professionals have created new technologies for processing fabric, seams, cuts. They also invented oblique inlays. This is a very convenient way to process any cuts. The finish is neat, even, and sometimes interesting. The same option allows you to make an attractive trim on any clothing.

oblique trim

If you do not need a tight or deaf collar on the dress, then you can beautifully process the neckline. For this, oblique inlays are suitable. It's easy to make them. You need to take the fabric and draw segments with a width of 4 to 5 cm. It is important to place them not along the shared thread, but at an angle of 45 degrees. The length of such an inlay is calculated as follows: the length of the cut plus 2 cm for the seam. The fabric for processing can be chosen according to the color of the dress, or it can be contrasting or satin. This will give the clothes an elegant and original look.

slice processing

How to make a slanting inlay was discussed above. Now let's figure out how to sew it correctly. There are several ways. For the first, the prepared strip must first be folded in half (inside with the wrong side) and ironed. To make it more convenient to work further and sew it more carefully, it is necessary to bend the fabric again by 0.5 mm from the cut and iron it a little. This will be the basting line along which you need to sew everything. Then attach the prepared inlay on the front side of the dress to the cut, and then baste with small stitches along the ironed line. The remaining ends on the inlay are then swept and stitched on the machine. Excess fabric must be cut off. Now bend the inlay itself to the back of the cut and baste with small stitches. It is important to do this closer to the fold of the finish and so that on the front side the seam is right in the wrong side. For beginner craftswomen, we will give advice: you can make a seam directly on the inlay, but at a distance of no more than 1 mm from the edge. If the note suits, then it needs to be ironed again, and then sewn on a typewriter.

Another way

This option is somewhat different from the one described above. But a similar processing of the neck with an oblique trim is also quite acceptable. First of all, oblique inlays are cut out from any fabric, their width should be from 2 to 3 cm. The fabric is not located along the transverse threads, but at an angle of 45 degrees. This allows for a neat finish. Next, you need to bend both edges by five millimeters and lightly iron. The length of the fabric strip should be equal to the length of the cut being processed and plus 2 cm per seam.

Processing with a special foot

A do-it-yourself cut oblique inlay is sewn on very quickly. This job will take just a couple of minutes. Attach the prepared strip of fabric to the cut on the front side of the product and baste with small stitches. If necessary, grind the cuts on the edges of the inlay, and cut off the excess fabric.

All new technologies are being developed. This allows not only to facilitate the process of work, but also to improve the quality of products. This is how the device for oblique inlay appeared. It is installed in place of the foot. With its help, the fabric is sewn faster, during operation there will be no creases or tucks on the fabric. Such processing of the neck with an oblique trim will be easy and fast.

After the facing is tacked on, you need to stitch it. It is desirable to lead the seam along the intended line. Then remove the extra threads, and throw the inlay on the wrong side of the cut being processed. The second folded edge must be basted again and try to make both edges of the inlay coincide in one seam. Experienced craftswomen hide the seam directly into the fold of the inlay on the front side of the product, while novice tailors can do it on the inlay. The distance from the edge should be no more than 1 mm. Then you need to stitch. It is desirable that the machine has a bias tape foot. It remains only to iron, although the method of processing the neck or other cutouts also depends on the type of fabric.

Cutting on knitwear

Knitted fabric itself is very complex. To sew a product out of it, you will need special equipment. If a bias tape is used to process the neckline, a special foot is a must. From the fabric, cut out a strip as long as the cut being processed plus 2 cm. The width of the strip should be from 1.5 to 2 cm. Iron the other end lightly. Now you will need to baste the inlay to the cut.

After the work done, check whether everything turned out as it should, and then you can start stitching on the machine. When working with knitwear, it must be borne in mind that the fabric itself is very elastic, so it is better to adjust the stitching a little zigzag. It is also not necessary to strongly stretch and stretch such a fabric, otherwise the product will lose its shape. Then remove the extra threads, and throw the inlay on the wrong side. The swept cut is no longer required to bend. You just need to gently tack it, and preferably right into the seam. To sew more evenly, it is better to iron first and only then sew on a typewriter.

Decorative neck trim

You can make oblique inlays from satin. The outfit will immediately become solemn and refined. As an option - use ready-made tapes, which today will not be difficult to purchase. Only when buying, you need to pay attention to the fact that the product is not from Oblique always in stock. They lie flat on the cut. The processing of such an inlay is very easy.

Satin ribbon processing

To trim the cut with a satin bias trim, it is better to buy it about 2 cm wide. You can sew it in two ways: with an open end and with a closed one. The edges of such a tape do not crumble, so the processing method can be chosen as you wish. In order to trim products with an open edge, you do not even need to iron. The tape can be basted immediately at a distance of about 1 mm. Then it needs to be stitched and go around the cut itself. The second edge of the tape does not need to be folded either, it can immediately be swept to the product. In this case, the second seam must completely coincide with the first. If the level of skill in working with a sewing machine is not high enough, then you can make a second one or use a different processing method.

A simplified version of the processing of a cut of a satin ribbon

You can trim the cut with a satin ribbon very quickly. You just need to make a little effort and do everything carefully. First, fold the ribbon in half with the right side to the very top and iron. And then attach one edge of the tape with the wrong side to the front side of the product and baste. Don't need to grind yet. In the same way, bast the second edge of the tape to the wrong side of the product. Accept again. This is done so that there are no two lines on the finish. For those who can not do a double stitch, this option is perfect. Then it remains only to sew on a typewriter at a distance of 1 mm from the edge of the tape. At the end of the work, you need to iron everything.

The use of slanting inlays in the design of clothes

As soon as fashion designers and technologists do not decorate clothes! Take the same oblique inlays. They can not only process the neckline or other sections, but also decorate the bottom of a dress or suit, emphasize the line of flounces or the entire silhouette. The processing technology is the same as described above. The inlays can be from the same fabric as the dress or blouse, but you can make them contrasting.

With the help of slanting inlays, you can not only process all the cuts on the product, but also use them as elements of clothing decoration. Any craftswoman can do this job. The main thing is to have a sewing machine, needle, scissors, fabric at hand. This treatment will refresh any dress. It is only necessary to cut the bias trim correctly and stitch it properly. When cutting, it should be borne in mind that the strip is cut not along the transverse or longitudinal threads, but along an oblique line, that is, at an angle of 45 degrees. All the work can be done in different ways, the most important thing is to first decide which one is best for this product. It is also necessary to take into account what fabric the dress is made of, and then in the end you can get a wonderful new outfit.

See how easy and correct to sew edging ribbons.

How to sew on edging tapes

Edging tapes can be bought already packed in factory boxes or ordered online. They come in completely different colors and different widths. My favorite handmade edging ribbons, I can choose what suits my project best. Now I already know where to get high-quality tapes, and I don’t experiment with store copies. Check out my previous post on how to make your own edging tape.

But how to sew edging tapes? I think I'm pretty sure I can show you how to do it right. It's like a lesson and a teacher's voice, right? No, really, I learned this method a long time ago, and then I tried to sew edging tapes in a different way, and was very disappointed. It always didn't work out.

What I did was clamp the hem between the edging ribbons and immediately went to sew it on (it turned out to be a kind of sandwich). It looked great from the front, but not so much from the back. Very often, the loops just didn't catch the edging tapes, and I had to choose, either rip everything out, or leave it like that, ugly. Oh my God! I'm so glad that I was finally able to learn this method!

What do you need to sew on edging tapes

  • Straight needles
  • Scissors
  • Object with raw edges
  • Sewing machine
  • The shirt to which I sew the edging ribbons is a tunic from Ma Cheri from the winter collection.

It is made of very expensive fabric from Mabel Madison, a supplier of high quality poplin.

How to sew a slanting inlay (video):

So, the reason I wanted to add piping was because I wanted to add a little bit of uniqueness, not only on the bottom, but also on the sleeves.

So, let's begin

You can add piping to anything, as long as it doesn't have frills on it (although you can add piping if you really want to).

The only modification you want to make is to add length to, for example, a top, dress, skirt, or pants. The tunic usually has a folded hem, so I just took off the allowance and that's it. And the tunic was ready for sewing on the edging ribbons.

Step 1: Place the piping under the fabric with two folds down and once up.

Step 2: Flip the fabric over so the right side is facing down (I know I should have done this already. As shown in the picture above).

Move the ribbons behind the fabric and unfold the bottom pleats. Make sure the right side is facing the wrong side.

Step 3: Continue pinning the entire ribbon. Use a lot of needles.

Here is a closer photo, where you can clearly see exactly how the edging tape is attached to the wrong side of the fabric. The top layer of tape is still folded.

Step 4: Start stitching from the RIGHT. You can sew 1/16 or 1/8 stitches. Just don't sew along the crease, just next to it.

When finished, the stitches look like this:

Step 5: This step is optional, but I like to cut off what's left after the sewn seam. This will come in handy when sewing knitwear, and the ability to skip seams will come in handy for this.

Step 6: Now comes the fun! Flip the fabric back to front. You will now process raw quacks. Pin the piping together and cover the seams. Press the seams lightly.

Step 7: Continue sewing until you have brought the edges of the piping together.

Flowing curtains with graceful flowing folds are what every housewife aspires to. One small detail is responsible for the presence or absence of assemblies on the curtain - a ribbon or braid sewn to the back of the fabric and tightened as necessary.

When making curtains or tulle with your own hands, it is important to know how to sew curtain tape correctly and securely in order to decorate curtains with spectacular and fancy frills.

Choosing the right webbing

With the search for the necessary material, you do not have to run around shopping centers - you can buy braid for tulle or curtains at any textile store.

The tape is a strip of various widths and lengths, which has special ropes threaded through the fabric at a certain distance. This detail greatly facilitates the process of sewing draperies, and the use of several rows of braid allows you to experiment with the final design.

However, when buying, you should consider the following points:

  • The most suitable material is synthetics, characterized by strength and durability;
  • The product must be straight, without waves and bends;
  • A universal option is considered a transparent tape, suitable for any type and shade;
  • The thickness of the braid should be about 5 cm;
  • To the required length, 10 cm are added for allowances, as well as a “margin” for the type of assembly (for frequent clear folds, 3-3.5 times the width of the curtain is needed);
  • It is also recommended to calculate the possible shrinkage of the product by 15-20 cm;
  • If the fabric of the curtain is strongly stretched during the cutting process, then a margin of 10-15 cm is required.
  • It is recommended to sew a trim on curtains, the material for which is a large mesh, a veil or transparent canvases with hand embroidery.

We distinguish varieties

The consultant in the store will certainly help you in choosing the optimal tape, but it is better to study the offered varieties before going to the mall. So, curtain braid is used for hemming curtains and for processing their upper part.

In the latter case, several types of tape are provided, differing in the type of folds: "column", "zigzag", "butterfly", "bow", "tube", "tulip", "triplets", "puff" and others.

Stripes for heavy fabrics are selected separately.

Sew to curtain

You can sew a ribbon to tulle both in the atelier and with your own hands at home. The second option is more economical, creative and high-quality, especially since special needlework skills and devices are not required. So, you need to stock up only with an iron, centimeter tape, scissors, a needle, thread and a sewing machine.

To figure out how to properly sew a braid to a tulle curtain, you should carefully read the step-by-step instructions:

  • We process the edges of the curtains, for which we make a hem on the sides 2 times and fix it with a basting seam. The top is folded to the width of the selected braid.
  • We cut off the required length of the tape, taking into account the hem and seam allowances.
  • We prepare the braid: we moisten, steam and iron it to exclude its possible shrinkage after washing.
  • We remove about 3 cm of the laces on each side so as not to sew them on during the bend.
  • We impose a strip, stepping back 5 mm from the edge.
  • We fix the tape with needles, pins or a basting seam with a step of at least 3 cm.
  • We set up the sewing machine: tighten the tensioner, set the presser foot pressure adjustment lever to the value “1”, pre-test on scraps or shreds.
  • We sew the upper edge on the sewing machine, controlling that unnecessary folds do not form on the front side.
  • We make additional lines under each row of laces, while the seam should not cross the ropes, so as not to impede their free contraction and stretching.
  • Securely (in 2 lines) we sew the folds of the ribbon to the tulle, picking them up in the resulting folded “pockets”.

Needlewomen with a certain experience and skill can easily do without an auxiliary outsole and immediately start working on a typewriter. It is important to be extremely careful not to climb on the laces and ruin the front of the curtain.

We form folds

The last step is to form folds on the product, where you also need to take into account a few tips. So, the folds are pulled together before hanging on the window, which allows you to control their evenness and beauty.

The process itself is as follows: the laces are tied at one end and fixed with threads; the ropes are gradually and evenly tightened, gently forming the desired pattern; elongated threads are tied, but not cut off.

As you assemble, it is better to immediately wind the elongated ropes onto an empty reel or cardboard provided in advance, so as not to get tangled in long laces in the future.

It is worth remembering that it is not necessary to dissolve the tulle or curtain during washing, however, the existing folds will make subsequent ironing difficult. In order to straighten the gathers, the previously stretched laces are straightened along the entire length and are carefully fixed with pins from the inside.

Curtain tape is a convenient and easy way to decorate curtains with various types of folds. The main thing is that every hostess can cope with such a task.
