DIY Christmas candles decoupage. Candles for the New Year decoupage

There are several ways. I offer two methods in one master class. Both methods are hot, but there are some differences in their execution. But keep in mind that you should only use wide candles to avoid fire. The paper is impregnated with wax and should not catch fire; usually the candle burns out in a “cup”. Still, it is better to place such candles in a tall glass candlestick, for example, made from. Never forget about safety precautions when dealing with open fire!

So, the first method is an example decoupage candle “Snowman”.

For it I needed:

  • A white (preferably) candle from IKEA
  • single-layer paper napkin with New Year's pattern
  • tablespoon
  • candle in a metal sleeve and saucer
  • scissors
  • lighter
  • pearl contour (optional)

At the very first stage, I prepared a napkin. I cut out the design so that it could cover the volume and cover the height of the candle. And a small seam allowance.

The prepared fragment of the napkin was applied to the surface of the candle.

She lit a small candle and heated a tablespoon. So that there is no soot on the napkin, I heat the spoon with the inside.

Using the outer side of the spoon, I make even movements across the napkin. The wax melts and saturates the napkin. Thus, gluing occurs.

Advice: the spoon must be in continuous motion, otherwise smudges or depressed pits will form.

When the napkin is glued around the candle, I overlap the joint of the napkin and glue it in the same way with a hot spoon.

I leave the candle to cool. She's almost ready.

I give the candle a finished look by adding an outline.

For example New Year's candle "Bears in the North" Let's consider the second method.

I have prepared for this method:

  • a white or yellow candle, preferably from IKEA
  • decoupage paper napkin with a New Year's pattern
  • wax paper
  • scissors

I cut out the motif from a napkin in the same way as in the first case, according to the size of the candle in terms of volume and height.

I separate the napkin layer from the lower layers and smooth it over the surface. I wrap it around the candle and press it with wax paper on top.

I turn on the hairdryer and direct hot air to the place where the drawing is located. After some time, the wax begins to melt.

The picture is saturated with wax, the napkin is tightly glued to the candle. As in the first case, you need to carefully direct the hot air dryer to the same place to avoid the formation of smudges and dents, because the wax becomes soft. I remove the wax paper.

There was some space left between the edges of the candle and the napkin, so I decided to decorate it with dots using acrylic paint.

Both candles are ready. Dear craftswomen, try it, choose which method you like.

Happy new creative year!

New Year's candy house with a surprise
Another wonderful and very detailed master class from a true professional - Antonina Mazur. ...

The technique is very popular among modern needlewomen. In it they embody the most original ideas for decorating boring household items. With its help you can create a unique gift, a stylish element that complements the interior. Decoupage of candles with your own hands looks very beautiful and festive. It creates a unique atmosphere of a real Christmas fairy tale.

The method was first used in the 12th century to decorate old and tatty furniture in the houses of Chinese peasants.

All you need is a decorative item, available materials and equipment. To ensure that decoupling candles with your own hands at home does not cause difficulties, adhere to the following rules:

  • Process the surface of the selected object. If it is uneven, sand it and apply 2-3 layers of primer. With smooth and even products that have been correctly selected, there is no such need.
  • Prepare your drawing. Remove the top bright layer of the napkin and cut out the desired fragment using scissors. If the picture is too small or is made on thin paper, cut out only large elements, draw the rest of the details with paints and a thin brush in place.
  • Glue the pattern to the surface. Dip a flat brush into a small amount of glue and carefully spread it over the outer layer of the napkin. Make sure that no folds or bubbles form on it - straighten them with a brush. Start gluing the design from the center, smoothly moving to the edges, then wait until it dries.
  • When the ornament is dry, paint on the missing parts and add other decorations - rhinestones, beads, sparkles. Cover the finished work with a special varnish to fix it and protect it from minor mechanical damage. If you apply the varnish in two layers, wait until the first one dries and then apply the second.

If you have a creative idea, you can safely get to work

Cold way

This option is suitable for thin candles - the paper will adhere more tightly to their surface. The cold method is the simplest solution to how to make decoupage candles with your own hands if you are a beginner and not familiar with all the intricacies of this technique. This is done as follows:

  • Prepare the picture as indicated in the rules.
  • If you are decorating a candle with a continuous layer, leave a little material for the seam.
  • Coat the napkin with glue and attach it to the decor item.
  • Smooth it out with a stick from the center to the edges.
  • Trim off any remaining paper to create neat seams.

Hot method (using a spoon)

For the hot method you will need two candles, a napkin or card with a pattern and a spoon. Next, follow the instructions on how to make hot decoupage of a candle with your own hands step by step:

  1. Cut out elements from a napkin.
  2. Separate the two bottom layers and apply the pattern.
  3. Heat the spoon over the fire of the second candle.
  4. Use the convex side of a hot spoon to smoothly move from the center of the design to its edges.
  5. Do not leave it in one place for a long time to avoid paraffin streaks.
  6. The paper will instantly become saturated with wax and adhere firmly to the workpiece.
  7. Go around the circle with a soft sponge and sand the surface.

Using a hair dryer

An ordinary hairdryer can be a good assistant for a master class on how to decoupage a candle with your own hands:

  • Prepare the necessary equipment in advance - white candles, napkins with pictures, scissors and a ruler, a brush, a paper knife and don’t forget about the hairdryer.
  • Decide on the size of the design - add a centimeter of napkin to the height and width of the product.
  • Separate the top layer with the picture and firmly attach it to the paraffin, with the pattern facing up.
  • Turn the hairdryer on to the highest setting and let it heat up.
  • Direct a stream of hot air at the element to be decorated and hold it in your hands.
  • Then heat the napkin itself with a hairdryer, slowly moving it over the surface of the object to be decorated.
  • Hold the air flow in one place until it sticks, press it with your fingers, but be careful not to get burned.
  • If necessary, turn on the hair dryer, let the candle cool, and then repeat the process.
  • Use a brush to smooth out any wrinkles or folds that appear.
  • Cut the paper edges at the base and bend their ends, fix them with hot air.
  • Use a paper knife to cut off the remaining tissue from the wick. If they start to come off, heat them again with a hairdryer until they are soaked in wax until they are completely glued.

What is candle decoupage?

Handicraft art is based on working with paper applications, which can be applied to almost any surface - ceramics, wood or glass. To ensure that the design remains functional, it is coated with several layers of special varnish.

A lot of time has passed since then, new decorative elements have appeared, and do-it-yourself candle decoupage has become a popular activity. For it, multi-layer napkins with various patterns or special cards made of rice paper are used.

The design method is accessible to anyone; all the necessary products can be easily found in the store.

How to choose a candle for decoupage?

The secret of beautiful and effective decoupage is the correctly selected wax blank. It is recommended to give preference to thick and white candles with a smooth surface. The color is considered neutral and is well suited for implementing any creative ideas.

When choosing it, you should pay attention to a number of the following nuances:

  1. Density of the top layer. The denser and smoother it is, the less likely it is that the paper fragments will quickly heat up and ignite.
  2. Work surface color. To work with colored products, you should choose prints or cards that are close to their tone. The colors of the picture transferred to them will be less bright than on a napkin or card.
  3. Thickness of candles. Thin and small wax objects will be difficult to use for their intended purpose, since they heat up immediately and completely. For them, you should choose a small pattern, small figures or notes.

Necessary tools and items for decoupage

As with any hobby related to handmade, decoupage cannot be done without special tools. The minimum set includes:

  • sharp scissors for cutting out appliqués;
  • palette or plastic plate for mixing paints;
  • synthetic brushes and acrylic paints;
  • insert file for transferring the design to the workpiece;
  • cards, placemats, and picture printouts;
  • universal acrylic primer and varnish-glue for decoupage;
  • special finishing varnish.

A more serious hobby and participation in master classes will require additional items:

  1. Varnishes with different properties - craquelure, gold leaf, mastic, shimmer.
  2. Table and dessert spoons - for hot decoration.
  3. A smooth cylindrical stick - preferably glass.
  4. Skins for surface treatment - making them smooth.
  5. Thermal tapes and adhesive-based rhinestones, other decorative accessories.
  6. Wax blanks with which you will work.

Decoupage candles for the New Year: do it yourself

Winter holidays are a great opportunity to show your imagination and realize your inspiration. You can realize almost any idea for decoupaging a candle for the New Year with your own hands, using various elements and designs for decoration.

New Year is one of the most favorite holidays of every person.

Wax products decorated in red, gold and silver colors, decorated with sparkles and decorative braid will look original and stylish.

  1. In the first case, you will need a white candle, a napkin with red, yellow and green shades, a small sponge and an acrylic golden outline. Prepare and glue the drawing using one of the above methods. Apply acrylic paint to the background using a sponge and let it dry. Draw the outline of the Christmas stars and leave the craft to dry for 5-6 hours. To create a festive atmosphere, use scented products with orange, cinnamon or pine scent.
  2. The second option differs in color scheme - replace the gold outline with a silver one, choose a thematic picture in cool colors and add a little sparkle upon completion of the work. Fix them with varnish and let the entire structure dry for 6 hours.
  3. To implement this idea, take a decorative braid and two colors of acrylic outline - white mother-of-pearl and white with gold glitter, a suitable pattern, a sponge and a simple white candle. The principle of drawing a picture remains the same. Create a background using a sponge and glitter outline and let it dry for 20 minutes. Decorate the top of the candle with white mother-of-pearl stars and outline the stars with a gold outline. Set the piece aside for 2 hours to allow it to dry completely. Decorate it with decorative braid along the bottom of the picture, gluing it with special glue.

Materials

  • a light-colored candle (preferably a large one, because the motif will look more beautiful and more holistic on it);
  • motive (we take it from napkins, rice cards); You can use the entire large part of the napkin or torn out individual parts.
  • a small candle for heating a teaspoon;
  • tea spoon.

Student's notes

Lay the napkin and leave it top paint layer, which we will use in our work.

Then we will need another burning candle over which we will heat the spoon. We heat the spoon from the inside (carbon deposits may form on it, this is normal), and outside of spoon, convex (clean, without soot), we will work.

The hot spoon begins to melt the top layer of paraffin and saturates the napkin, so it sticks to the candle.

Movements must be fast and confident enough, without stopping in one place for a long time, otherwise we will melt a hole in the candle, which then cannot be corrected. When the spoon cools down, heat it up again and smooth the napkin again.

So, we soldered the motif into the candle, heat the spoon again and again in a circular motion we go over the candle so that there are no accidentally missed areas of the napkin that are not saturated with paraffin.

As a result, we ended up with a rough, uneven surface that looks, to put it mildly, clumsy.

We need to fix this! Another napkin will help us! This time, a white, regular napkin or piece of paper towel that you have on hand.

We make a lump and intensively, with effort, begin to rub the candle, i.e. polishing.

Of course, the candle can be left like this, especially if we use a motif that completely covers the candle. But, of course, I want something more. You can use special candle paints, you can use them to either paint a candle or make an outline with individual dots.

Secrets of mastery

There are several nuances that need to be taken into account:

  • It’s better to heat the spoon again than to overheat it and make a hole in the candle;
  • make sure that the carbon deposits on the inside of the spoon do not “creep” onto the outside and stain the work;
  • I recommend practicing on a thin regular candle, feeling the degree of heating of the spoon and the force with which to press the spoon to the candle.

Don't be afraid to fantasize, don't be afraid to bring your ideas to life! Even the most ridiculous and unusual idea can be realized into great work! Dare, create and don't stop!

Have you ever heard the French word “decoupage”? Perhaps you have even seen creations made using this technique? Or have you caught yourself wanting to decoupage candles with your own hands? In this article we will talk about what decoupage is, where this technique originated, how it developed and what you will need to create masterpieces. You will also have the opportunity to watch an interesting and simple master class.

What is decoupage?

When they talk about decoupage, they mean one of the most interesting ways to decorate something. Using such a unique and easy-to-use technique, you can decorate almost any thing: plates, glasses, glasses, flower pots, vases, cutting boards. You can decoupage candles, bottles, boxes, photo frames, any interior items and even furniture.

Using decoupage, it is possible to make a unique item from a simple, simple item. And things that have long served their purpose can be revived to new life.

Having mastered this technique, any craftswoman will be able to create real works of art with her own hands. Handmade work is always highly valued, so some craftsmen even make good money from the sales of their creations.

If you look at an item decorated using the decoupage technique, it seems as if a talented artist worked on it. But this is an illusion. After all, the images in this case are not drawn, but simply masterfully pasted together with the paper on which they are made. And you will soon see this by learning how to make decoupage candles with your own hands. Motives for this can be taken anywhere. These can be newspapers, books, paper napkins, printed images, fabric and much more. We will help you make one of these creations. If you are interested in how to decoupage a candle, carefully read the rest of the article.

History of decoupage

The first objects made using the decoupage technique were found in Ancient China, in the 12th century. Then this art gained its popularity in Italy, after which it spread throughout Europe. By the way, the word “decoupage” itself comes from the French “decouper”, which means “to cut out”.

It is believed that this art comes from Eastern Siberia, and it was from there that it has already migrated to China and other countries.

At the height of the 19th century, the art of decoupage was extremely popular among the upper classes. Most often, it was used to create magnificent boxes that were used by girls to store jewelry, love letters and other personal items.

Decoupage candles: master class

Of course, it’s nice to contemplate the creations of needlewomen who have mastered this technique to perfection. But it’s much more interesting to create something similar with your own hands. Such a thing will be especially valuable for you, because it will contain a piece of your love. Next we will talk about how to make decoupage of candles with your own hands. Be patient and you will soon learn it.

Necessary equipment

You will need a large candle, preferably a light shade.

Since we will be decoupaging candles with napkins, you will need a regular paper napkin with a design that you like.

Also, in this matter we cannot do without a spoon and a small candle, with which we will heat it.

Preparatory work

First you need to delaminate the napkin. We will only use the top layer - the one that contains the drawing. We will not need the remaining parts in our work.

Then carefully cut it out with small scissors. Having made all the necessary preparations, we will decoupage the candle. For beginners, this technique may not seem entirely clear at first glance, but there is nothing complicated about it. All you need is patience, perseverance and a great desire to create an exclusive item for yourself or a unique gift for friends and family.

"Hot" decoupage

When starting the main work, take a spoon and a small candle with which you will heat it.

Then start heating the spoon from the inside. Please note that carbon deposits may form on it during the process - this is not a big deal, the main thing is that it is not on the convex, clean side. After all, this is exactly what we will work with.

In order to transfer an image to a candle, you need to attach a previously prepared motif to the product, heat a spoon over the candle (or using a stove) and smooth the image with gentle circular movements. This way you will “solder” the drawing into the melted paraffin, and it will no longer be afraid of external damage, such as water or someone’s too careless hands.

Your movements should be very confident, fast, but at the same time light.

Don't stop in one place, otherwise it will leave indentations that can't be fixed later.

If you notice that the spoon has cooled down, heat it again and feel free to get down to business. Decoupage of candles is not a difficult task, but it is painstaking.

Be careful not to miss any areas of the design, even the smallest ones, because all of them should be saturated with a thin layer of paraffin.

Here, in fact, the main stage of the work is completed. Don't be alarmed that you end up with a slightly uneven and rough surface in places. Now we will fix this.

For this we need a regular white napkin. Make a little lump out of it and begin to intensively grind the candle. Don't be afraid of damaging the product. After all, if you have completed the previous stage well, namely, thoroughly soaked the entire surface of the paper with paraffin, you have nothing to fear. Your drawing will remain safe and sound.

After you complete this step and thoroughly sand the candle, you will notice how even and smooth its surface has become.

That's all. You have just learned how to decoupage candles.

Additional decoration

If you are satisfied with the result of the work you have done, you can leave everything as is and put your creation in a place of honor, or go to your friends and present it as a gift. But this is not the end of the candle decoupage. The master class you are studying will introduce you to other ways to decorate your work.

For example, you can paint a candle the color you like best, or the color that best matches the design. You can also use stencils to apply ornaments or use your artistic skills. It is best to use acrylic paint. It is the least toxic and does not dissolve in water after drying.

You can also use other materials for decoration: ribbons, rhinestones, dry leaves, flowers, lace, spices, beads, fabrics, and indeed anything that your imagination suggests. Such decorations will make your creation even more unique and inimitable.

In order to consolidate the result, you can coat the candle with a special varnish. But check with the seller and make sure that this varnish does not release toxic substances during combustion.

That's it, you have made a decoupage candle. We hope that the MK you just got acquainted with helped you simplify this process and make it as enjoyable as possible. In conclusion, I would just like to add that although using this master class it is not at all difficult to make works of art, it would be a good idea to practice on a smaller candle, grasp all the subtleties of the process, and then start creating a masterpiece.

Look within yourself for inspiration

Create without stopping. After all, very often it is in the process of work that the most successful ideas come. Sometimes they lead to the creation of real masterpieces that can delight you and your loved ones for many years. Don't be afraid to try! After all, every failure only brings you closer to the desired level of skill. The most valuable thing is the experience you gain in the process of work. And this experience will stay with you forever.
