Keri Smith - creative notebooks

Cover of Rediscover the World by Keri Smith

Yesterday (03/07/16), while running around the shops in search of a small stepladder as a gift for my mother, I stumbled quite unexpectedly in one of them (Uyutera) on books like Art Therapy or Coloring Books for Adults. Of course, I could not pass by and stuck my nose. And among the various patterned large and small coloring pages, I saw the book “Destroy Me” by Keri Smith, now widely known among creative people (professionals and amateurs, i.e. amateurs), and next to her another, previously unknown to me, her book “Rediscover the World ". I took it in my hands so that I could skim through my eyes to understand if I needed it and ... The book opened like an oracle somewhere in the middle on a page where it was written: “Collect or describe as many patterns as possible found during your travels. Collect ... ". Everything, I was caught in the net of this book. At this stage, patterns for me are not just beautiful element design, but signs with a secret, perhaps even mystical meaning. It was like a directive written especially for me, like a hint from a good friend.
Yes, I have looked at other sections of this book and further strengthened my decision to buy it, regardless of the cost.
The book is 202 pages long and I devoured it in an hour and a half in the evening and realized that:

  1. I'm glad I bought it;
  2. I will read it over and over again.

It is full of general ideas and at the same time specific instructions for developing your creative abilities. It has a lot of deep thoughts in simple language.

Now about its content. It consists of several introductory articles about what and how to do, very short and concentrated in meaning, 59 research chapters and an appendix - a field work diary. The main idea of the book is that starting to look more closely at any objects or phenomena, collecting them, systematizing and contemplating, we wake up and “feed” our imagination and change ourselves.
The book is not just not boring, but so diverse that even reading the text is similar to looking at pictures (and you must admit, this is always more interesting than reading the text). Different fonts are used (often similar to handwritten), different sizes and, even, a different direction of placement of the text. All this together helps a lot, both for the author - to arrange, and for the reader - to catch the accents of meaning. And also, it is full of hand-drawn pictures so simply that any reader can draw them (and probably draws something similar), photographs, everything that is called illustrations.

Book "Rediscover the World" - inside

There is not an ounce of "water" in the book. In my opinion, this is a very significant plus.
Both the design and the meaning of the book have already allowed me to look at the world around me from an angle that was unexpected for me.
And most importantly, she inspires me, but does not force me, and I can do what I like, always having a friendly hint - what to do next and how on this path of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world.

Reviews:

“As an artist, Keri Smith is well versed in art, sees the essence of things. She transcends the classical art school and finds her own voice in the whimsical modern polyphony. Her books are amazing personal experience and so far none of them have disappointed me.
I also highly recommend Wreck this journal (Destroy me!) and The Guerrilla Art Kit (Guerrilla Art) by this author.

“The main message of this book is to collect, seek and find! And through these collections, Keri Smith will teach you to look at the world with different eyes. You will gain a deeper understanding of shapes and colors, discover that unique things can be found anywhere - among fallen leaves, rocks, broken bottles, old books and newspapers...
The exercises were inspired by creative minds such as Leonard Cohen and Tom Robbins. There is a section for personal notes at the end of the book.
